Stress disorders can be psychological disorders that result from an atypical reaction to both short- and long-term anxiety due to physical, mental or emotional stress. These disorders may include, but are not limited to, obsessive-compulsive disorder and post-traumatic stress disorder.

Stress is a conscious or unconscious psychological feeling or physical state resulting from physical or mental "positive or negative pressures" that overwhelm adaptive capacity. It is a psychological process initiated by events that threaten, harm or challenge an organism or that exceed available coping resources, and it is characterized by psychological reactions aimed at adaptation. Stress is wear and tear of the body in response to stressful agents. Hans Selye called such agents stressors and said they could be physical, physiological, psychological or sociocultural. And stress is not an anxiety disorder and it is not a normative concept.

A person is typically stressed when positive or negative (e.g., threatening) experiences temporarily strain or overwhelm adaptive capacity. Stress is highly individualized and depends on variables such as novelty, speed, intensity, duration or personal interpretation of the input, and genetic or experiential factors. Both acute and chronic stress can enhance the morbidity of anxiety disorders. The pleasure of some may be the stressor of others. Panic attacks, for example, are more common when the predisposed person is exposed to stressors.

Treatment BeterKlinic

BeterKliniek is the clinic for Integrative Medicine that bridges regular and non-regular medicine.

An van Veen (physician) and Michael van Gils (therapist) look for the cause of a condition or disease. That is where the treatment starts otherwise, as people often say, it is 'carrying water to the sea'. We call this cause medicine. Sometimes it is also desirable to treat the symptoms (at the same time). We call this symptom medicine.

Chronic disorders often have their cause in epi- genetics. You can schedule a free informative telephone consultation (phone number 040-7117337 until 1 p.m.) at BeterKliniek to discuss your symptoms so that we can provide you with further advice.
