Sex addiction is a condition characterized by compulsive participation in or involvement in sexual activity, particularly sexual intercourse, despite negative consequences.
Proponents of a diagnostic model for sexual addiction consider it one of several sex-related disorders within hypersexual disorder. The term sexual dependence is also used to refer to people who report an inability to control their sexual urges, behaviors or thoughts. Related or synonymous models of pathological sexual behavior include hypersexuality (nymphomania and satyriasis), erotomania, Don Juanism and paraphilia-related disorders.
The concept of sexual addiction is controversial. There is much debate among psychiatrists, psychologists, sexologists and other specialists whether compulsive sexual behavior is an addiction, and therefore its classification and possible diagnosis. Animal research has shown that compulsive sexual behavior stems from the same transcriptional and epigenetic mechanisms that mediate drug addiction in laboratory animals; however, as of 2018, sexual addiction is not a clinical diagnosis in the DSM or ICD medical classifications of diseases and medical conditions. Some argue that applying such concepts to normal behaviors such as sex may be problematic, and suggest that applying medical models such as addiction to human sexuality may serve to pathologize and harm normal behaviors.
The ICD-11 created a new state classification, compulsive sexual behavior, to cover "a persistent pattern of failure to control intense, repetitive sexual impulses or urges that result in repetitive sexual behavior."

An van Veen (physician) and Michael van Gils (therapist) look for the cause of a condition or disease. That is where the treatment starts otherwise, as people often say, it is 'carrying water to the sea'. We call this cause medicine. Sometimes it is also desirable to treat the symptoms (at the same time). We call this symptom medicine.
Chronic disorders often have their cause in epi- genetics. You can schedule a free informative telephone consultation (phone number 040-7117337 until 1 p.m.) at BeterKliniek to discuss your symptoms so that we can provide you with further advice.
