Refund or in-kind, what's the difference?

If you want to get health insurance, you can choose between a naturapolis and a restitution policy. The main differences between the two are how free you are to choose your own health care providers, how you can claim your health care expenses and the amount of the health care premium.

Refund policy

With a restitution policy, you always choose which doctor, therapist or hospital you go to. This does not affect the reimbursement you receive. However, with a reimbursement policy you sometimes have to pay the bill of your care provider yourself first. Afterwards, you will be reimbursed by your health insurance company.

Naturapolis

With a natura policy, the insurer makes agreements with a number of care providers. Only with these contracted care providers will you receive the full reimbursement that applies to your insurance policy. Are you going to another doctor or hospital? Then the insurer will often only reimburse 50 to 80 percent. Due to the limited free choice of care, a naturopolicy is always cheaper than a restitution policy with the same insurer.

Combination of natura and restitution policies.

In addition to restitution and in-kind policies, some health insurers also offer combination policies. These health insurance policies allow you to choose your own care providers for some types of care, such as physical therapy. But for other types of care, the insurer works with contracted care, for example for certain operations. Click here to read the earlier article on health insurance.
