BrainQ® EEG examination

EEG is the abbreviation for electroencephalogram. An EEG is an examination in which brain activity is measured electrically. It is not a treatment method. Electrodes on the head record electrical activity (brain waves) in the brain at a frequency of up to 80 Hertz (Hz). Both normal brain activity (as in a healthy person) and abnormal activity, phenomena that do not normally belong in an EEG, are examined. One can think, for example, of stress and the reaction to stress.

At BeterKliniek, we use dynamic EEG analysis. This means we analyze an EEG in motion. We will give a stress stimulus with a light towards the eyes during the measurement and watch the brain activity.

electroencephalogram

What to expect.

With an EEG test, we can show whether there is "normal" brain activity and whether you respond normally to stress. We cannot see activity of specific neurotransmitters and/or hormones with an EEG. With an EEG we cannot treat you, we can only see where certain problems may be coming from. We do not diagnose with an EEG. But we can determine progress between measurements.

In particular, the dynamic EEG study that we will perform is designed to determine stress levels and coping with stress stimuli. In other words: Do you suffer from stress (burnout) and how do you deal with stress stimuli.

You will not receive the results of the EEG examination in writing. This remains with BeterKliniek to see if you are progressing. You will receive a verbal explanation and, if desired, you can schedule a consultation to make a treatment plan.

The entire consultation takes about 30 minutes:

  • Upon arrival, we will first briefly explain to you how the measurement will be done.
  • Then the EEG device is connected.
  • The measurement takes about 5 minutes. Afterwards, you will receive explanations and advice.

What should you pay attention to?

In order for the EEG examination to go as smoothly as possible, it is important that you consider the following points:

  • Before the consultation, make sure you do not have excessive stressors (intense exercise, rushing, running).
  • Do not drink coffee 6 hours beforehand
  • Preferably wear your hair in a center parting so we can properly connect the EEG device.
  • Preferably do not wear earrings on your earlobes. In fact, these must be taken off for the examination.
  • Please put your cell phone on silent and make sure we cannot be disturbed during the measurement.
  • Coughing, excessive swallowing, laughing and talking can interfere with the measurement. For example, if you have a cold, make sure you have calmed/sneezed your throat or nose before the measurement.
