Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a group of inflammatory disorders of the colon and small intestine, with Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis being the main types. Crohn's disease affects the small intestine and colon, as well as the mouth, esophagus, stomach and anus, while ulcerative colitis primarily affects the colon and rectum.

IBD also occurs in dogs and is thought to arise from a combination of host genetics, gut microenvironment, environmental components and the immune system. However, there is an ongoing debate that the term "chronic enteropathy" may be more appropriate than "inflammatory bowel disease" in dogs because it differs from IBD in humans in how dogs respond to treatment. For example, many dogs respond only to dietary changes compared to people with IBD, who often require immunosuppressive treatment. Some dogs may also need treatment with immunosuppressants or antibiotics if dietary changes are not sufficient. After ruling out other diseases that may cause vomiting, diarrhea and abdominal pain in dogs, intestinal biopsies are often performed to investigate what type of inflammation is occurring (lymphoplasmacytic, eosinophilic or granulomatous). In dogs, low levels of cobalamin in the blood have been shown to be a risk factor for a negative result.

Treatment BeterKlinic

BeterKliniek is the clinic for Integrative Medicine that bridges regular and non-regular medicine.

An van Veen (physician) and Michael van Gils (therapist) look for the cause of a condition or disease. That is where the treatment starts otherwise, as people often say, it is 'carrying water to the sea'. We call this cause medicine. Sometimes it is also desirable to treat the symptoms (at the same time). We call this symptom medicine.

Chronic disorders often have their cause in epi- genetics. You can schedule a free informative telephone consultation (phone number 040-7117337 until 1 p.m.) at BeterKliniek to discuss your symptoms so that we can provide you with further advice.
