Bulimia nervosa, also known simply as bulimia, is an eating disorder characterized by binge eating followed by purging; and excessive preoccupation with body shape and weight. The goal of this activity is to expel the body of the calories eaten from the binge eating phase of the process. Binge eating refers to eating a large amount of food in a short period of time. Purging refers to trying to get rid of the food consumed. This can be done by vomiting or taking laxatives. Other attempts to lose weight may include the use of diuretics, stimulants, water fasting or excessive exercise. Most people with bulimia have a normal weight. Forcing vomiting can result in thickened skin on the knuckles, tooth decay and effects on metabolism and caloric intake that cause thyroid dysfunction. Bulimia is often associated with other mental disorders such as depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder and problems with drugs or alcohol. There is also a higher risk of suicide and self-harm. Clinical studies show a link between bulimia and vulnerable narcissism caused by "parental invalidation" in childhood, leading to a later need for social validation.

Treatment BeterKlinic

BeterKliniek is the clinic for Integrative Medicine that bridges regular and non-regular medicine.

An van Veen (physician) and Michael van Gils (therapist) look for the cause of a condition or disease. That is where the treatment starts otherwise, as people often say, it is 'carrying water to the sea'. We call this cause medicine. Sometimes it is also desirable to treat the symptoms (at the same time). We call this symptom medicine.

Chronic disorders often have their cause in epi- genetics. You can schedule a free informative telephone consultation (phone number 040-7117337 until 1 p.m.) at BeterKliniek to discuss your symptoms so that we can provide you with further advice.
